Moscow: Foreign Minister S Jaishankar arrived in Moscow on Tuesday for a four-day visit to Russia to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) foreign ministers meeting. His visit is taking place just a few days after Defense Minister Rajnath Singh's visit to the capital of Russia. Rajnath came here to attend the meeting of the eight-member SCO Defense Ministers. Among the SCO member countries, India and China are also included.
Jaishankar will attend the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) meeting during his stay in Moscow. This will be the third meeting of the council in which India will join as a full member.
May meet foreign minister of China
Apart from the SCO meeting, the foreign minister is expected to have a bilateral meeting on Thursday with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi. They are likely to meet in eastern Ladakh amid increasing tension on the border between India and China.
On Friday, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh held a meeting with his Chinese counterpart General Wei Fengahi here for more than two hours. This was the highest level of contact between the two sides after tension erupted on the border in eastern Ladakh in early May.
On his way to Russia, Jaishankar stayed in Tehran on Tuesday and held talks with his Iranian counterpart Jawad Zarif, which covered various aspects of bilateral and regional developments.
He tweeted, “I had a meaningful meeting with Foreign Minister Jawad Zarif while staying in Tehran. The Iranian Foreign Ministry said in a tweet that the two countries insisted on strengthening bilateral relations in all their contexts. It has been learned that during the meeting of the two foreign ministers, the Chahbahar port project and the situation in the Gulf region were discussed.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh also stayed in Tehran while returning home from Russia on Saturday and spoke to his Iranian counterpart Brigadier General Aamir Hatami.
